Yoga & Meditation Unit

Unit Description

Students will be introduced to various yoga poses, as well as taught the benefits of meditation. By the end of the unit, students will be able to properly demonstrate sun salutations. Students will also have the opportunity to work with small groups to create an original yoga routine utilizing a wide range of poses.

Standards & Benchmarks

S3.H14 Stress management
Standard 3 Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.

Identifies stress-management strategies (e.g., mental imagery, relaxation techniques, deep breathing, aerobic exercise, meditation) to reduce stress. (S3.H14.L2)

Enduring Understandings 

Yoga breathing can help with the flow of poses, as well as prevent injury.
 
Yoga or other forms of flexibility exercises should be incorporated into daily routines, in order to support overall wellness and prevent future injuries.

  1. How can breathing through poses help with the transitions and relaxation during a yoga routine?

Students will be able to... 
  • design a whole-body yoga fitness routine to be taught to the class
  • explain how yoga can prevent injury in other physical activities
  • execute a full sun salutation from memory, to begin their yoga sessions

Assessments & Evidence of Student Learning

Informal teacher observation and feedback will be provided to students throughout the entire unit. Students will be asked to engage in various yoga poses and demonstrate the necessary asanas to complete a sun salutation. The unit will conclude with an authentic assessment in which students will demonstrate understanding of several asanas, as well as the changing of breath as one moves through each asana.
